What he wants, he gets

Aspen's just turned 18 here

He knew Aden would not approve. Astra would tell him all the horrible links to cancers he could be exposing himself to.

Aspen did not care. He walked in, design in hand, brokered the deal, and set a date. That day came, and Aspen showed up on time, stripped to his waist, and lounged on the table with his back exposed to the air for the needle.

Two artists, working one on each side, at his insistence, began the intricate lines, pausing to wipe and review with the special light frequently. Only perfection mattered. The pain was sensational until the nerves adjusted, leading to a slight disappointment for the young man receiving his first ink.

When he left, close to dawn, for the design had been made to cover most of his back, he listened to the care instructions, so he could tell Astra. She would care for his back, and in a few months, he'd find that little club with its relaxed dress code to show off his ink.

Aden might not approve, but Aspen was certain Aden would love the image of his wings under a blacklight.

Carmen Maria Alonso-Vasquez, commonly shortened to Carmen Vasquez, was born the same day R-E-S-P-E-C-T debuted, and it might as well have been written for her. The summer of race riots across the United States saw tensions beginning to flare in largely Hispanic neighborhoods, as the urban decay of inner city structures slowly ghettoized once prosperous subdivisions of all races.

Carmen grew up in a world that was getting darker, more violent, and harder to live in. Her oldest brother was killed in a liquor store robbery. Another one went to juvie for drugs, got out, and ended up in prison for breaking and entering. One sister had a baby by 16, and another one was beaten in a mugging so badly that she has to live at home still.

Carmen decided she wasn't staying in that world, and studied hard in school, presenting an application to the local police academy the summer she graduated. They turned her down, citing her brothers as reason why 'Latinos are prone to violence and bad judgment'. Carmen took their written statement to the local chapter of a Hispanic Civil Rights group... and that fall, she started at the Police Academy in the next county over.

Carmen loves her family, even the brother in jail, but she rarely goes home. She tried hard to get them to move out, tries to see that the kids being born know school and hard work are their escape, but she's fighting an uphill battle. Luckily, she's got Blake Farras, a man who began as her partner, until they decided they liked each other more than that, and she went Riot Squad in hopes of keeping young urban youths from doing stupid things as suicide by police. They've lived together a long time, but she won't bring up a child in mixed-race/mixed-religion straits, given how hateful the world is, and doesn't see a need to break what they are by marrying for any other reason, despite her still devout Catholic ways.

Ryan grew up in a working class family, and always thought he'd follow in his father's footsteps at the local factory. Only, it shut down when he was ten, and his father had to find work to support him, his little brother, and his mother.

What work there was slowly wore down the Prince patriarch. He impressed upon his elder son the need for hard work in life to succeed, a lesson Ryan took to heart when his father passed away the winter he turned 12. By the time Ryan was sixteen, he was managing full time hours to help keep the family above water, in addition to school, so that mom could be home for his little brother. Ryan tried to set a good example to his brother, and knew, if they were going to scrape money up for college, it needed to be for little Ben.

So he talked his way into the Army at seventeen, set up all his money to go home to them, and made sure it was being saved up for his little brother's college. When he finished his tour in Afghanistan, he turned around and used his MP background and G.I. Bill to get into a good police academy.

And along the way there was a beauty named Elena who stole his heart, giving him the joy of fatherhood with a daughter to care for.
